METRO / BUS / TRAMS / Ferry – in Helsinki, these modes of transportation are run by Helsinki Region Transport (HSL), which means the same ticket/fare card can be used on them all. Helsinki Region Transport has a service point at Rautatientori metro station, upper level: ticket sales and information, route maps and Helsinki Cards. Remember that the Helsinki Card entitles you to unlimited free travel on public transport within Helsinki area.
The public transport system in Helsinki region includes transportation by trams, buses, metro, Suomenlinna ferry and local trains.
The metro operates from Ruoholahti via Itäkeskus to Mellunmäki and via Itäkeskus to Vuosaari.
The bus terminals of the metropolitan public transport downtown Helsinki are:
- Kamppi terminal, buses nos 102–205 to Espoo
- Elielinaukio, buses nos 206–345 to Espoo and buses nos 360–474 to Vantaa
● Railway Square buses nos 611–742 to Vantaa.
Single tickets in Helsinki (transfers allowed within 1 hour) €2.80 (children €1.40), available from buses and trams.
Prepaid tickets €2.20 and €1.10 resp. from ticket machines; prepaid tram ticket €2 (from ticket machines). Tram tickets entitle you to travel on tram routes (transfer to another tram allowed within 1 hour). Single ticket (paid by mobile phone) €2.20.
Single tickets in the metropolitan region (Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa): single regional ticket €4.50 (adults), €2.30 (children). Tickets are sold by bus drivers. Transfers allowed within 80 minutes of the time stamped on the ticket on entering).
Single-charge day tickets
Helsinki internal and regional cards for adults and children are available for 1–7 days. Cards are sold e.g. at the customer service point of the Helsinki Region Transport (Rautatientori metro station), R-kiosks, Stockmann’s and Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau.
Helsinki internal ticket: E.g. the adult ticket for 1 day costs €8, for 2 days €12, for 3 days €16; children €4, €6 and €8 respectively.
Regional ticket (Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa): E.g. the adult ticket for 1 day costs €12, for 2 days €18, for 3 days €24; children €6, €9 and €12 respecrtively.
Penalty fare €80 and the price of a single ticket (€2.70) will be charged from anyone travelling without a valid ticket.

HELSINKI CARD – this card entitles its holders to unlimited free travel on buses, trams, metro, local trains and Suomenlinna ferry within Helsinki during the validity of the Card. On airport transfer of Finnair buses Helsinki Card holders get a 30 % discount. Helsinki Cards are also sold in 50 other places e.g. downtown hotels, Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau and at Helsinki Expert Shops. NOTE FOR TOURISTS The tram routes 2 and 3 trace a figure-of-eight in the centre of Helsinki passing most of the “must“ sights of the city. You can board the tram at any stop.
